Low Vision Screening in Birmingham

At the end of the school year Trey's teacher's mentioned to me that they thought that Trey was having a hard time reading small print. Right after school was out Trey's annual eye exam was due and he saw his regular pediatric eye doctor (normal exam and check on eye health damaged due to first stroke), we told him what the teacher's had said. He didn't notice any visual problems but since there had been damage when he was a baby to his optic nerve and possibly other areas he wanted us to see a Low Vision specialist. His regular eye doctor thought that the problem with the small print could be his attention span or possibly they way his eye "talked" to his brain to see and read. Today we saw the Low Vision specialist. She was able to do more tests than the regular eye doctor and discovered that he needed bifocals. All of this time that he wouldn't look us in the eye may not have been him being defiant but not being able to see us. So, now he has his first pair of glasses. There is a little prescription for nearsidedness (far away) and then the bifocal part for upclose (farsidedness). He looks really cute in his glasses and likes them. He was so funny on the ride home looking out of the window telling us what shapes the clouds were. We will soon find out how well he can read with them. He did read a few letters to me with them on but I think later this week we will do more work with them, right now we are just going to get used to wearing them and wearing them for longer time periods.

Next week we get the cast off!!!

3 week post op

Today, Wednesday (July 8) we headed back to Birmingham for Trey's 3 week check up for his leg and to have his full length cast shortened to a half cast. The doctor seemed pleased with what he saw and made an appointment for us to come back to have the new cast removed in almost 3 more weeks. We were able to clean his stinky leg a little before the new cast was put on. We saw the incisions on the back of his leg (heel chord) and the two, one in front of his thigh area and the other on the back of his thigh (hamstring and rectus/quad muscle). They looked a little scary to me, but looked good otherwise. I took a picture of his new cast and the top incision on his thigh. His new cast is waterproof, yes waterproof. As in he has permission to take showers or baths and get into a pool. We just have to let the cast dry/drain before he can get moving after one of these events. He isn't really walking well right now. Him being Trey, he doesn't say much besides some mummbles about having a cast and then he hops or scoots on the floor. He will try though if we ask him to. We aren't worried about this right now since this was just day one and not an entire day and we figure in a few days he will be running around normally again. Thank you for all of your prayers during this surgery and recovery! Please do continue to pray for him, he has been such a trooper! Your prayers, love and support have been such a blessing!
