Our excitement at Trey's last ball game

Sunday was the end of Trey's first season of ball. He played on/for the Miracle League. For those of you who aren't familiar, the Miracle League is for special needs children and young adults. They have a ball team so that the children who would normally not be able to play ball will have the chance. There are no winners or losers, no 3 strikes and you're out just swing the bat until you hit the ball (either coach pitch or off the T) and run to first base, some ran all the way home and some even ran to the playground in the middle of the game and it was okay.

Sunday was trophy day! Trey had been looking forward to getting his trophy for a week. We had a 2pm game and the trophies would be presented at a party afterwards. It was so hot and humid outside when we got there. Trey was such a big boy, for the first time all season when the National Anthem was being played and everyone saluted the flag he stayed in one place instead of running the bases during. The way the game is played is that team A lets all of their players hit the ball while team B is in outfield. Then team A goes to the outfield while team B's players all hit the ball. Then team A hits again and then team B. Trey's team was on their second round of hitting the ball, his buddy (all of the kids have a buddy that helps them run the bases or whatever they need), his buddy and he started off walking to the bases the next thing I knew his buddy was carrying him into the dugout and was laying him on the floor of the dugout. The EMTs are always at the games, they were just seconds in front of me getting to him. When I got to him, in just seconds, he was so red and laying in a pool of sweat and not very responsive. Everyone was trying to help, we had people bringing him juice boxes and asking questions. The EMTs had us go into the press box where the air conditioner was on. I held him while the EMTs looked him over and took his temp. and gave him ice packs. He was awake but not himself. We were then told because of his condition and the fact that he isn't supposed to get overheated and is supposed to stay hydrated that we could either ride with them to the hospital or we could drive ourselves but we were taking him to the ER. I was all for it!!! I was so scared. Jason calmly said he would drive. On the way I tried calling the pediatrician on call and of course it took 5 or 10 minutes to get service. I spoke to the answering service and they tried to politely tell me that the doctor on call would let the ER doctor take care of him and I politely (I might not have been that polite) told her that he is a special case, has had 2 strokes, is 6 1/2, we weren't sure if he had lost consciousness, and has a rare disease and the doctor NEEDED to be notified. We got to the hospital as I was hanging up with the answering service we took him in to the ER and of course there was no one at the check in desk so we were holding Trey waiting. The nurse finally came up and took his name and took him back for vitals and weight at that point because I am mommy I got to sit at the insurance desk and answer date of birth and insurance card questions. As I was approaching the desk the pediatrician phoned my cell, I am so glad the answering service listened to me, he told me that he was talking to the ER doctor and telling them what to do. By the time I had finished the doctor's call and the questions Trey was already in an ER bed, we aren't sure if the EMTs had already notified the hospital of our coming or if our pediatrician was more on the ball than we knew but the back part of the ER was waiting on us.

Trey was starting to act a bit more like himself and didn't want to be in the hospital. After several hours, blood work, and IV fluids it was revealed that Trey was dehydrated. It happened so fast!!! He was fine and had been drinking he had even left the field a few times while the game was going on and drank but it was so hot and it just took a lot out of him. Our pediatrician called us several times while we were in the ER to check on Trey and he had spoken to the doctor that was working on Trey several times too so they were in sync. We were told that he would probably have to stay over night but that upset him so bad that the doctor's agreed that after the bag of fluids and with our promise to come back if something happened and promise to be at the pediatrician's office first thing in the morning, and of course to push the fluids, that he could go home. So, home we went.

Trey was back to acting like himself when we got home, just tired. He and Emily played a little and he ate a little. We went in to see the doctor on Monday as promised and he ran more tests that showed that Trey was still dehydrated. The doctor encouraged us to keep pushing fluids and monitor his potty time. He seems to be drinking better but we are still watching him.

The trophy you ask? Before we left the ball field and while he was still out of it he asked about his trophy. One of the head people of the Miracle League handed him his trophy while he was in my arms and we left for the hospital. He doesn't remember any of that. When he started to feel better in the ER he said "Oh no! My trophy!", we told him he got it before he left but he didn't remember. He has now put it in my room for safe keepings.

I don't know if any of the people that were there Sunday will read this but I would still like to thank everyone for their calls, prayers, support, and visits!!! We were told that while the games were still going on at the field they were updating Trey's condition to the crowd. We had several calls and visits from people at the ball field and our church family and the EMTs that were there (Tommy and Danny), they came to the hospital to visit too!!! I hope to find out where they are so we can say a special thank you to them!
